WE AIM TO AMPLIFY

BLACK

ART + HISTORY + LITERATURE + FOOD

The Black Diaspora abounds with a vast array of underilluminated artists, cuisines, and authors. Quotidians' mission is to serve as a liaison between historical research and the quotidian of civil rights issues. As a liaison between archives and artistry, Quotidian is a form of informal education by using foodways, visual art, and writing as a conduit for critical conversations.

AN ACT AGAINST VOYEURISM

In 2021, Quotidian arose as a redirection of frustration during the pandemic. The daily occurrence of Black Americans being gunned down as the world continued to digest the violent voyeurism of Black bodies on screen was inescapable.

Voyeurism in this sense

“ Enjoyment from seeing the pain or distress of others”

The repetition of police shootings compounded with the unaddressed epidemics of poverty and discrimination in Black and brown communities, existing before the onset of COVID-19, is unavoidable. Quotidians’ approach towards sustaining long-lasting impact is to amplify the joys and complexities of the African Diaspora that have been and continues to be neglected in education systems.

Three of my boy friends died before they reached the age of 20. There were many times before I let that sink in that I returned a blow for a blow… but I found that whenever I could it was always better to take that venom that builds hatred in you and you turn that into work.” - Gordon Parks
